We are pleased to share this list of plants that we have grown successfully in the xeriscape gardens at Keppel Croft. We are in Zone 5B. None of these plants are given any waterings. We rely upon rainfall for moisture and in winter there is good snow cover.
Keppel Croft's Thyme and Lavender GardenIn mid-summer the thyme and lavender garden is both fragrant and colourful. Honey bees and skipper butterflies are attracted to the blossoms. This is one of the easiest of the xeriscape gardens to maintain. Weeds are easily pulled from the gravel mulch. During the season many volunteer seedlings of thyme and lavender take root in the gravel. They are potted up or transplanted to other parts of the gardens if they are not needed in their initial locations. After flowering the plants are trimmed back. In the winter the plants seem to escape the attentions of the voles and rabbits.
In the coming season we will have to trim back the thyme and lavender plants as they tend to take over the hardscaping. Each year the plants take over more and more of the space! Several years ago a gathering of family and friends used this circular garden as the location for a ceremony for a renewal of vows. Right now there wouldn't be space for such a gathering!
